Real self-defence, if it is to be truly effective, must be instinctive, fast, and decisive. At Real Combat System South West, that's exactly what we offer. Our system draws on the most effective elements of proven combat disciplines: Krav Maga, Boxing, and Grappling (Wrestling).
The Harsh Reality of Violence
Violence in the real world is nothing like the glamourised versions seen in movies, or the sanitised formats in martial arts competitions with rules, mats, and referees.
Real street violence is ugly, chaotic, and extremely dangerous, often with life-altering consequences for everyone involved.
That’s why we focus on practical, pressure-tested training designed to prepare you for real-life confrontations—not just ring sport or theory.
What We Teach
Our training covers a comprehensive set of skills for self-protection:

Striking with fists, palms, elbows

Blocking and counter-striking

Effective kicking and knee techniques

Defence against weapons (knives, batons, etc.)

Breakaway techniques (from chokes, grabs, and holds)
-
Dirty grappling and wrestling (including groundwork)
Awareness and Threat Recognition
We teach you how to recognise the pre-attack rituals often used by aggressors. These may involve distraction tactics—classic lines like “Got a light, mate?” or “Do you know the time?”—designed to lower your guard before an ambush.
Situational awareness is essential. Ask yourself: How can I defend myself if I’m not even aware of a threat?
Many people become victims simply because they weren't paying attention. That’s why we put a strong emphasis on training you to be alert and tuned into your environment.
Avoidance is Key
Avoidance is often overlooked in self-defence, yet it’s one of the most effective tools for staying safe. We teach sensible strategies for avoiding danger altogether—like steering clear of known trouble spots or people with a reputation for violence.
To be blunt: if you regularly visit violent pubs, clubs, or hang around with volatile people, don’t be surprised if trouble finds you.
Managing Fear and the Adrenaline Dump
Even the most highly trained fighters can freeze when fear and adrenaline kick in. If you're not prepared for it, this fight-or-flight response can overwhelm you.
At Real Combat System South West, we pressure-test our training to ensure you're not only aware of this natural reaction—but prepared to function under it.
Who Can Train?
This system is ideal for both men and women aged 18 and over. You don’t need prior martial arts experience, nor do you need to be super fit or strong. All we ask is that you bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
